Day1-( Saturday)- Bhubaneswar- Taratarini (3hr drive + visit)
Upon arrival Bhubaneswar (please try arrive during morning, so we cover most of the things) meet our representative and drive towards Taratarini .
En route visit the textile village- Olasingh and beauty of Chilika lake while catamaran boating .
Taratarini: a nice village along with nice Rushikulya river and taratarini hill , the gate way of tribal land in southern Orissa.

Day2- (Sunday)- Taratarini- Baliguda (4.30hr drive+ visit)
Meet the Kondh tribes at their villages while drive towards Baliguda,/ see the scenic beauty of eastern ghat on the top of Kalinga ghat area.
Baligauda – a small town in Kondhmal district which surrounded by every green tropical jungle KUTIA Kondh villages.

Early stand up to ride the catamaran boat at Bhargavi river village jetty -walking distance from our village retreat (welcomed by boatman) – total 2hr boating and hiking . Morning after early breakfast drive towards Puri , visit the classic puri such as the grand cremation ground called Swargadwar, (free photography) , walk around outer side of the grand Jagannath temple (because non hindus are not allowed) then strait Bhubaneswar airport. Board the flight for your on wards journey with lots of sweet memories!!!!!!

Tribal Description

KUTIA KANDHA:

The Kutia Kandha is a section of the Kandha tribe found in Kandhmal and Kalahandi dist. (south central part) of Orissa. The tribesmen are known for their buffalo sacrifice ritual locally known as “Kedu” to worship their Earth Goddess- “Darni Penu”. They belong to the Proto-Australoid racial stock and shspeak a dialect their own called “Kui”, which belong to Dravidian language family. They worship large number of deities and spirits; the chief among them is Darni Penu, the Earth Goddess worship by the village headman called Majhi & the village priest is called Jani.

Dongria Kondh: In the remote mountainous wilderness of the Eastern Ghats region of South Orissa lives a fascinating Kuvi-speaking tribe called, the Dongria Kandha. They inhabit the lofty Niyamgiri hill ranges in the district of Rayagada. They stand apart fromothers for their famous Meria festival, expertise in horticulture and colourful dress, adornments and life style. For being the denizens of hills, forests and highlands (dongar), their neighbours name them Dongria. Dongria men and women are quite fashionable in their personal adornments, that makes them attractive and distinguish them from others. Dongria men put on a long and narrow piece of loin cloth and women use two pieces of cloth, each 3-4 ft. In length. Both men and women grow long hair. A wooden comb (kokuya) is fixed at the hair knot of men and women which adorns the hair-lock and keeps the hair tight. A tiny knife (pipli) with colourful thread balls at its metal handle, adorns the hair lock of women. Men and women put on aluminum neck rings, beads & coin necklaces (kekodika), finger rings. In addition to that women wear bangles, anklets, toe rings. Both men and women wear earrings and nose-rings.

Bonda tribe: in the wild and remote mountainous country located towards the south-western tip of the Malkanigiri highlands lives a unique tribal community called- “Bonda”. The tribesmen identify themselves as “Remo” (man). Bonda speak a language of their own that belongs to the Austro- Asiatic (South Mundari) language group. Bonda men are brave and bold. They derive their identity from their arms, such as bow, arrows, long knife which they always carry and sago palm-wine which is their most favorite drink. The Bonda women with their clean-shaven head decorated with head bands of Palmyra strips and plaited fillets of caryota fibber. Mass of colorured beads and shell strings, brass neck rings and necklaces hanging down even below the navel and the brass bangles covering the whole of the lower arms are the typical ornamentation of the Bonda Women. A short and narrow strip of striped loin-cloth woven at home by a double-bar tensioned loom covering only the private parts comprises the woman’s wear.

GADABA:
Culture of the Gadaba, one of the prominent tribal communities of Orissa. The name; Gadaba has been derived from the word “Gada”, name of a brook in the Godavari valley. The tribe has Proto-Australoid origin. The Gadaba speak Mundari language, called Gutob belonging to Austro-Asiatic language family. The Gadaba men use a piece of cloth, called lenguthi with a flap, which hangs down in front. Women wear two pieces of cloths, each measuring about 5ft. By 2 ft. Called Keranga. The Gadaba girls/ women decorate their bodies with ornaments such as peculiar type of earrings, which are made out of brass or aluminium which hangs down from a hole in the ear that reaches the shoulder. Besides, they use ornaments, like rings (mudi) bangles made of brass. Their hair is neatly combed and fixed at the back by hairpins.

LANJIA SAORA:

The saoras are one of the most ancient tribes of India. Have a racial affinity with the Proto- Australoid stock, their dialect called Sora, comes under the Austro-Asiatic family of Munda group of languages. Lanjia Saora constitutes one of the primitive sections of the Saora tribe. They are so called by their neighbours strip of male loin cloth is worn in such a fashion that both the red embroidered ends hang down in front and back like a tail (Lanja). Their women greatly enlarge their enlarge their ear lobes to wear rounded wooden pegs and have a characteristic tattoo mark down the middle of the forehead. Install the village deities represented by wooden posts at the entrance of the village. Have male and female shamans to serve their magico-religious needs. Famous for their attractive wall paintings,” IDITIAL”. Observe Guar, the secondary burial ritual to commemorate the dead by sacrificing buffaloes and by erecting menhirs.

Wildlife Tour in Orissa

Here in Orissa there are two National park- Similipal (3200 sq km) and Bhitarkanika (672 sq km area, a mangrove forest, core area is 145 sq km) and 19 wildlife sanctuaries. But here the below given suggested itinerary we offer you Satkosia Tikarpada wild life sanctuary (project tiger), Bhitarkanika National park (famous for wild crocodile on nature while boating),chilika Lagoon- ramsar site (famous for Migratory and residence birds on nature), because the density of fauna are more of these places.

D1-Bhubaneswar

Upon arrival airport / Railway station meet our representative and transfer to hotel. If time permit visit Nandan Kaman- 20km from Bhubaneswar and tiger and lion safari at there (safari last bus has been running up to 1600 hr). Return back to hotel.

D2-Bhubaneswar-Satkosia (Project –Tiger) {5hr drive+Visit}

Drive to Satkosia wild life sanctuary. Upon arrival there check in a nice jungle resort run by local and forest department inside of core area (With proper safety). Afternoon hiking inside the jungle trail guided by govt. Guide (its mandatory). Meet the wild animal on nature.

D3-Satkosia wild life sanctuary

Early morning hiking on jungle trail enjoy the flora and fauna (including different birds on nature) and then drive to Satkosia Gorge and boating in the Mahanadi River. To meet the Magar crocodile on nature. Afternoon again hiking on the jungle pond area to watch the movement of wild animal. *Morning and late afternoon it’s time to movement of the wild animal. So again do the two hiking inside of core area and enjoy the flora and fauna of that area.

D4-Satkosia-Bhitarkanika National Park (5hr drive+Visit)

Morning drive towards Bhitarkanika National Park. Check in a nice resort in buffer zone. Walk around the area to meet different birds on nature. Overnight stay in that resort, if it is cold and cloudless night then enjoys the camp fire with star full night.

Chilika lake: the area is around 1100 sq km. Home of migratory and residence birds and also wild Irrawaddy dolphin on nature. (But which side we mentioned that side is famous for bird’s zone because that area is outer chilika). Morning ride a catamaran boat (with boatman) and meet the migratory and residence birds on nature. Overnight stay pleasantly in that resort.

Satkosia Wildlife Sanctuary

Located in the south- western  part of Anugul district (60km from Anugul; 110km from Dhenkanal; 190 km from Bhubaneswar) of Odisha. The sanctuary is covering an area of 795 sq km which is covering four districts such as Anugul, cuttack, Nayagarh and Baud.

The Satkosia Gorge is a unique feature in geomorphology of India. Here Mahanadi has cut right across the Eastern Ghats and has formed a magnificent gorge(22km) with sylvan beauty and excellent features.

The topography of the region is supports moist deciduous forest, dry deciduous forest and moist peninsular Sal Forest. This area is the home for Tiger, Leopard, Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Spotted deer, Mouse deer, Nilgai, Chousingha, Sloth bear, Wild dog etc., Varieties of resident and migratory birds, reptilian species( Gharial, Magar, Crocodile, Fresh Water turtle, Poisons & Non poisons snakes etc.)

Best time to visit: Oct. to April (during summer season chances of sighting is more) ; entry gate point ( Pampasara) open from morning 7am for day visit and till 5 pm for accommodation at the resort/ camp of the sanctuary.

The major wildlife of the Bhitarkanika National park include salt water crocodile, water monster Lizard, spotted deer, monkey, wild boar,  jungle cat , fox, Jackal, mongoose, fishing cat, hyena etc.

The sanctuary also has a sizable bird population with prominent being 8  different type kingfisher, open bill stork, ibis , cormorants, Darters, water hen, Hupei, Tree pie,  Wood Peckers, Drongos, Egrets, red jungle fowl and Herons.The flora of Bhitarkanika National Park chiefly comprises of Mangrove forest with Hental being the prominent trees.

Located in the south-eastern part of Puri district; The sanctuary is covering an area of 1100 sq km.

2) From Bhubaneswar : To Cuttack- Kendrapara- Pattamundai- Rajnagar- Khola gate (Upto Cuttack NH16 then State Highway-9A & it is 150KM by road)

Day5 – ( Wed ) – Baro Paraja village/ Sano paraja weekly market/ Bora Gadhava village – Camping ( Tented Accommodation)-3hr drive+ visit

Morning meet the Bora Paraja at their isolated village in Koraput jungle zone. After couple of hour with them/ very nice for photography. Drive towards Nandapur area and meet the sano paraja tribe at their colorful weekly market.

Drive towards Gadhava village in the core of Lamtaput jungle./ warm welcome by the village chief and mouthwatering dinner along with bonfire arrange by our guide and local tribal chief.

Day6 – ( Thur ) – Bonda Tribal Market ( Onkadully)- Gadhava Tribal village- Camping ( Tented Accommodation)-2hr drive+ visit

Early start to meet the most interesting Bonda tribe at their weekly market – Onkadelly. After couple of hour with them back to the same gadhava village / have an organic cooked lunch.

Pm- hiking the Rana village/ 1hr

Evening tribal group dance – “ Dhemsha” (with proper costume and traditional music) very nice for photography./ mouth watering dinner along with bonfire/

Overnight- Bora Gadhava   village (tent)

Day7 – ( Fri ) – Kunduli- Sano Paraja village- Visakhapatnam (5hr drive+ visit)

Morning after breakfast drive towards Kunduli , the largest tribal market in our state famous for the Paraja, the Rana and the Mali tribes. very nice for photography / Visit the Sano paraja village too

Check in a nice hotel on beach in Visakhapatnam.

Day8 ( Sat ) –Departure (hotel to airport is 40 min)

Colorful Festival with Tribal Wonder in Odisha (Orissa)

RATH YATRA ( CHARIOT  FESTIVAL )- 2023-24

Date of Celebration: 20th June to 29th June 2023

“Journey with God”; the grand chariot festival of lord Jagannath, One of India’s greatest annual events,  popularly known as Rath Yatra takes place in Puri and other part of India and abroad . But especially colorful at Puri and tribal areas

At Puri: when a fantastic festival sets forth from Jagannath Mandir it commemorates the journey of Krishna from Gokul to Mathura. The immages of Jagannath, his brother and his sister are brought out from the temple and dragged in hug “wooden cars” know as Raths, down main grand road to Gundicha Mandir (about 3 and half km)

The main car of Jagannath stands 14mt high, over 10Square, and rides on 16 wheels, ach over 2mt in diameter . Hundreds of thousands of pilgrims (and tourists) flock from all over India to witness this stupendous scene.

Once the cars reach Gundicha Mandir, the gods take a week-long ” Summer Break” before being reloaded onto the cars and returned to Main Jaggannath temple , in a virtual repeat of the previous week’s procession. After the festival, the cars are broken up and used for firewood in the communal kitchens inside the temple. New cars are constructed each year, mostly out of a special wood, thereby putting enormous pressure on the state’s dwindling forests.

At the Tribal area in Odisha (Orissa)- Same date and same procession occurs but some place three chariots and some place one chariots / special event is with the traditional custom and musical instruments the tribal group of particular areas join in this festival with local which is very interesting in photography point of view

3 – JORANDA SADHU FESTIVAL: (11th & 12th   Feb. 2025)

It is the festival of Mahima religion Sadhus (holy men) in the month of Feb. In their main monastery at Joranda near Dhenkanal annually. The unique worship of supreme sadhus’ (who wear only lean tree bark on their lower part) at their monastery and the holy fire which is for peace and harmony for the universe with 11 ft. Fire stand attract many thousand visitors and devotee throughout the state.

There are three catogorised Mahima Sadhus such as
1) Gruha Tyagi- (Primery)- Those are students in preliminary stage they mediate and completely dedicate in this religion and the disciple of Supreme sadhus./ wearing saffron color two piece of cotton cloth.
2) Kaupuni Dhari- (Secondary) – after 12 years of dedication and disciple the supreme sadhu committee decided them to promote primery to Secondary/ wearing saffron color very lean cloth tie by organic rope on their waist to cover only the lower private part.
3) Bakala Dhari (supreme) – after 12years of dedication and disciple of the supreme sadhus committee deciede them to promote secondary to Supreme / the supreme sadhu leave all the cotton cloth / wear only two piece of tree bark (locally that tree called “Kumbhi”)/ almost all supreme sadhus matted hair is more then 2 mts long. During festival these Supreme sadhus only allow to worship the main monastery of infinity with big fire stand

4-KONARK FESTIVAL: (1st-5th December)

It is a festival of classical dances of India performed at the backdrop of the 13th century Sun Temple, Konark. Which is held in an open air auditorium, showcases a magical parade of India’s classical and traditional dance forms annually? Besides the dance performances the guests will explore the language of stone of sun temple. Sand Art exhibition will be yet another attraction for tourists.

5-Nabarna Bhoga at Joranda (17th September 2023) 

It is another interesting festival of Mahima sadhus (saints) at Joranda main monastery. Where thousands of Sadhus and Devotees gather to celebrate this festival .

“Nabarna Bhoga” means the first crop of the season eaten by these Sadhus (Holy men) in a group . First they offer it to god of infinity with very typical ways, then the supreme sadhus eaten with high respect and then all the devotees receive the holy food . It is very interesting to snap the photography when they eat together and also the special worship.

6-Chariot Festival at Konark (20th January 2024)

It is the festival of Sun god , which Begin from Konark and proceed to chandrabhaga surya (sun) temple -3km with great procession  (pulling by people) and again return process after 27 days or accordingly solar calendar  (15th Feb. 2024) 

Each year the day of celebration changes accordingly solar calendar.

7-RAJARANI MUSIC FESTIVAL :(January)

This festival is held against the backdrop of the 11th century Rajarani temple in Bhubaneswar during the month of January. The ambiance is relaxing and uplifting. The temple has absence of any presiding deity so it’s like a monument. But famous for its magnificent statues of eight Digpalakas (guarding the eight cardinal directions of the temple). The musical evening’s performances by the great maestros of Indian classical music.

8-FOLK DANCE FESTIVAL AT SAMBALPUR: (4th – 6th January)

Besides the Classical Odissi Dance Orissa is rich in folk dances also. A festival is organised at Sambalpur (western part of Orissa) for three days (from 4th – 6th Jan.)To present glimpses of folk dances of Orissa from different regions. The famous folk dances accompanied by rhythmic music, vocal as well as instrumental, keep the tourists (guests) spell bound. Another attraction of that festival is the dancers and the accompanists also present glimpses of the local handloom fabric through their costumes.

9-KHANDAGIRI MOHASTAV & KHARAVELA MELA AT KHANDAGIRI 🙁 January- February)

A grand fair is held at Khandagiri near Bhubaneswar from MAGHA SAPTAMI (We inform you the date, because it’s in our Oriya calendar) for about a week. A variety of local handmade product, especially from the rural areas, is displayed for sale.
During evening hours Indian classical and folk dances is also organised on the open air pandal.

10-KONARK DANCE & MUSIC FESTIVAL 🙁 19th – 23rd February)

12-KALINGA MAHOTSAV: (23rd -24th February)

It’s a dizzying dancing and dynamic stage presentation, is held at the hill of the famous Peace Pagoda. It showcases the vibrant traditions of martial arts India through a colourful display of dances and music. The calm and solemn statue of Buddha overlooking the entire stage from the top of the Dhauli stupa. The martial dancers interpret incredible the brave idea of kalinga through their different traditional weapons and thrill the audience. The aim of the festival is to harmonize the vigor of martial tradition with the display of peace through the art of dance.

13-DHAULI MAHOTSAV: (25th- 27th March)

Dhauli Mahotsav showcases a wide range of rural art and culture from classical to folk items such as Odissi dance, Gotipua, Odissi vocal, chhau dance etc. Many artists from different disciplines perform on the different days of the Mahotsav. The event aim is to embrace many artists into its cultural fold and also at international cultural amity and harmony.

14-PARAV- TRIBAL DANCE FESTIVAL: (16th – 18th November)

Orissa is rich in tribal culture with 62 tribes; after a day’s hard work the simple tribes have host of dance forms to enjoy their life. With a view to unfolding this aspect of the tribal culture a festival of tribal dances known as “Parava” is organised at Koraput every year. The tribal dancers with their traditional costumes and typical head gears keep the tourists (guests) amused. The aim of this festival is to display the rich tribal culture to rest of the world.
